24 Hours to Last a Lifetime
by Amanda

Wow! The 24 Hour Food Fast was amazing! It was such a great experience to learn what it feels like to be in poverty. Saturday night, we played neat ice-breaker games like Popeye love Papaya, a few noodle games, an essentials activity, ate three crackers and a cup of juice, then we got in small groups.

The essentials activity really made me realize what I truly need, and what I don't. We had to spend, and had a long list of things to choose from...

Every piece of clothing and pretty much anything we brought cost money. I ended up sharing a mattress, sleeping bag, and pillow with a friend because we ran out of money to spend. We realized how it feels to live in poverty when people really have to decide what comes first to purchase, and it was really cool to see that.

The small group discussions were really deep, and made us really think. We made small presentations about the discussions we had and explained them to everyone. The presentations were wonderful, and really interesting!

Sunday morning we woke up, got as ready as we could, ate a few crackers and drank juice, then went off to 8:30 Mass. None of us looked very attractive because we couldn't afford to buy church clothes or make-up with our money! At the end of Mass, we were called up to the alter to be recognized for being a part of the Food Fast and it was actually kind of embarrassing being in front of the whole church looking the way we did!

After Mass, we walked over to Saint Vincent De Paul to help sort everything and clean up around the building. It was a lot of fun to help the ladies out and we got one parking space VERY clean! :)

When we were done there, we walked back over to the church, ate a few crackers, then headed over to Saint Teresa's Church to help clean up around a couple of old houses that are going to be used for classrooms for the church. One of the houses was not in very good shape, and it was extremely sad to see, and made all of us very thankful for what we have in our lives.

After we cleaned up, we went back to the Saint Joseph's gym and planned Keysis for the Middle School youth as well as High School. It was fun to plan the whole lesson ourselves and be in control! :) We played a few games in between and just had time to relax and hang out with everyone.

Over all, the whole weekend was an amazing experience for me, and I know
